A short video how to switch or activate the "Cold" or "Normal" Battery heater mode after Mazda update AM036A is done.
The "Cold Mode" activates the battery heater from between 5-10 ° C, the time for fast charging is shortened by about 55 minutes from SOC 20% to 80% at -10 ° C.
To activate the "Cold Mode" follow below steps:
1. Switch ON Power 2x without pressing brake pedal to READY OFF mode
2. Move / check the gear selector to the P position.
3. Hold down the pedals and perform the following steps within 10 seconds !(the pedals should be depressed throughout the process until step 7).
4. Press the minus button on the Left steering paddle (-) three times.
5. Press the plus button on the Right steering wheel paddle (+) three times
6. Press the minus button on the Left steering paddle (-) three times.
7. Press the plus button on the Right steering wheel paddle (+) three times.
8. Release the pedals.
9. "EV system warning light" flashes 4 times when the changeover has been carried out correctly.
10. Switch OFF the Power .

To activate the "Normal Mode" once the cold mode activated just follow the above steps and monitor "EV system warning light" flashes twice !

Couldn't they just have an option in the Infotainment system settings menu?

One would hope, as not only is this method extremely awkward , it doesn't appear to provide any feedback as to which mode the car is currently running in!
I totally agree! Although I think kopaszkrapek gives a hint at the end of the described procedure:

"9. "EV system warning light" flashes 4 times when the changeover has been carried out correctly.
10. Switch OFF the Power .

To activate the "Normal Mode" once the cold mode activated just follow the above steps and monitor "EV system warning light" flashes twice !

But of course; Mazda should make the whole procedure much more simple.

What would make you change this setting? Sometimes I’m a bit puzzled about what’s best to preserve the battery. Right now we have moderate winter temperatures of around 0 degrees Celsius. Should I leave it in ‘normal’ mode or is it better to switch to ‘cold’ mode and what would it bring? This morning it was -6 degrees but the battery heating did not get activated.

It is my observation that the battery’s large mass and thick armour means it takes quite a while to cool down to the external temperature, so the air temp would need to be -5 or below for (possibly over) 8 hours before it will reach that.

But that obviously causes a problem for users (specifically Northern European) where cold means approximately Zero Celsius. So “Normal Mode” is not very helpful.

I don’t need the battery heater on all the time, so “Cold Mode” is also useless. I only need it to warm the battery before a long drive on a cold day… Being able to set it like I remotely set the cabin climate would be absolutely ideal.

Fully agree with your comments with regard to the remote possibilities. One thing I find lacking f.I. is the impossibility to change the charge settings and the charge schedule remotely. Now you have to get into the car to change either of these. Maybe more difficult, but nevertheless achievable, would be the ability to have a setting where you could say you want a certain range at a certain departure time given a certain charge rate. For instance: 150km by 7:30 AM at a charge rate of 11kWh.

I think I misunderstand how the cold mode is supposed to work.
My understanding was that the heating activates when the car is plugged into a DC charger, but instead it seems that when I activated it a few days ago it was running the heater when the car was off and parked. Is this possible, or am I just crazy?
I left the car in the morning with 77% charge, came back to 62% in the evening... nothing else was running.

Hi, I believe it heats continuously the main battery below 5C outside temperature.
