Hi everyone,

Since the beginning of this year we own a fantastic MX-30 Luxury in polymetal gray and absolutely love it. However, recently we've noticed a whining noise coming from the front of the car which seems to be the engine, but only above roughly 100 kph and only when actually putting some power into it.

During a longer ride it gradually decreases in noise level, but especially from a cold start (is that even a thing with EVs?) it's extremely present the first 5-10 km. Anyone experienced this as well?

I know it's not the fake engine sound, because I've turned that off and even turned it on and then off again just to verify. It's also a different sound, a whine instead of more of an engine rumble that the fake engine sound produces.

Also: I confirmed it's only when putting power into the engine because even when driving 120 kph and lifting off the throttle, it immediately stops, but as soon as you press the throttle again: there it is. On cruise control it's the most annoying as you hear it constantly fading in and out sometimes a bit more and sometimes a bit less, of course based on how much power it needs to provide to keep the speed as set.

Now since the car isn't due for maintenance until the end of the year and we've noticed nothing else that might be deemed strange, we haven't yet contacted the local dealer. But an internet search also delivered no result, although it's hard to sift through the dozens of "fake engine sound" posts and articles that pop up. The range is also fine, over here it has been roughly 10-20C the past month with pretty good weather and so far we haven't been below 170km on a single charge with 1-2 longer highway trips and the rest very short trips in the neighborhood only.

And that's the thing: on low speeds it's extremely quiet and only above approx. 70 kph the tyre noise comes in slightly and after that the wind noises slightly, but that's all nothing compared to the engine whine when you reach about 100-105kph. It's weird because below 100-105 kph it's literally impossible to reproduce that engine whine.

So... any thoughts from fellow MX-30 owners? Thanks in advance!

Do you have the heating switched on? That makes an odd robo-whirr noise
The heating specifically has been off the last couple of weeks, but at times the AC was on. I do turn it off whenever I don't need it however, simply because it saves energy.

I will test it out tomorrow, but could that really be related to the speed and how much throttle I provide? It sounds strange to have the heating/AC make noise when I accelerate and stop making noise as soon as I let go of the throttle.

Hi! I’m from Ukraine, and 6-month have perfect white MX (but my rx8 have no fuel, in our country now really big problem with fuel) when the outside temp go above +20C, i can hear same sound from the heart of car. Sound is come on speed above 98kmh, and present if “charge/load gauge” show more than 1/3 of load on charge or discharge, with no difference. If load is little smaller than 1/3 sound is absent. I have theory - this is radiator blinds, what opens on speed and load above, and make air storm from hood to battery covering, because on lower temperature i can’t hear any sound on speed to 149kmh!!! On january have -19C and no problem, warm inside, mileage is 170km on full, we happy)))

Hi ValerOK, wow you described exactly what I'm experiencing. You even have more exact figures like 98 km/h, I wasn't even that far in my checking.

The theory you have with the radiator blinds is interesting, because indeed I only started noticing with warmer temperatures. Here in The Netherlands it's also above 20C right now, but in the next week there should be some days with more rain and slightly below 20C (18/19C) so it's worth checking out what the behaviour will be by then.

One question: with the radiator blinds, do you mean the ones in the interior? Or in the nose of the car (the grille)? Reason I'm asking is because I thought the Mazda has a liquid cooled/heated battery, but of course using air when it can, it might be more efficient.

I did try with AC off, even from starting at home, so no fans on, no AC on, nothing. And still the same noise is heard at ±100 km/h and above. If it is what you say it is, then I guess we'll just have to deal with it, but I find it odd that the sound goes away once I let go of the throttle, if I keep pressing the throttle on and off and on and off, the sound also does the same.

All the best to you in Ukraine!

Thanks for Your support!

Mazda battery have cooling system with “refrigerant” with same heat pump as in cabin heater/ac (cooling fluid use only in engine, invertor and charger) And conventional air cooling in plastic box from front grill to hood and around battery. Blinds is open when car is off, and close immediately on started car. If you have gopro, is reason to film what do they do on speed??? Two picture with open and close blind, sorry for dirty Mazda)))

Cool! I haven't even looked that far, but I totally understand what you mean. Unfortunately I don't have a GoPro, but maybe I can borrow one from a friend. Or buy a cheap one. I will definitely check it out, you've made me curious to find out more about this. :)
