Mazda has filed a patent application in the US for a supercharged two stroke engine!
According to the filing the engine uses spark ignition in high-load operation and compression ignition (like with diesel engines) in low-load operation. The engine, the patent argues, prevents knocking at high loads while improving fuel efficiency during low load compression ignition.
