The MX-30 has a slightly more whimsical interior than we've come to expect from Mazda. A thin layer of cork is used as a surface treatment in places—a nod to Mazda's origin as a cork manufacturer before turning to vehicles. Cork is used on the back of the interior door handles as well as lining the center console, which conceals its pair of cup holders with flip-up lids.

I am actually happy to have the MX-30 on this end of the range spectrum. There are plenty of use cases for which a small SUV with a commute and around-town range makes sense. The MX-30 could work as the main car in a two-car household, for grocery trips, taking the kids and dogs to a local hike or park, as an everyday commuter, and so on. I promise you that a car with a 100-mile range will fit a lot into a lot of people’s lives better than you think – probably even yours, reader.

If you’re in a mood to go down a tech- and graph-laden rabbit hole, the MX-30’s e-GVC (for G vectoring control) should keep you busy for a few hours. The Coles Notes version is that it uses the electric motor to control the increase of torque while in a corner and transfers the load back to the rear wheels more efficiently than a gas-powered vehicle can achieve. Not sure I have the kind of nuanced ‘car feel’ to sense that, but I can say cornering felt crisp and in control, even at some good speeds.

The cabin is well equipped, with even the starting trim getting a power moonroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and multiple charging outlets. Phones connect quickly with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto supported and stow neatly beneath the console. The recycled felt on the doors and the tweedy seat materials not only are fashionable, but colors, material, and finish designer Simona Merker assured us that the plush textiles and the cork-lined door handles and trays are just as durable and easy to clean as more common automotive interior plastics and leathers. The seats are a little firm beneath their center racing stripe, but the seating position is good, and they offer eight-way adjustability with power lumbar support and seat-position memory. The back seats are a bit cramped due to the curve of the roof, and entry through the smaller doors is tight. But there is decent legroom for adults, and egress is easy thanks to powered front-seat position buttons on the seatbacks.

By contrast, the MX-30's handling is pretty good. Its steering has a precise and neutral feel with nice feedback, and it can be satisfying to chuck this SUV 'round a corner. The ride is a touch firm over bumps and dips in the road, but it's never harsh or jarring.

Basically, the Mazda MX-30 is a very good car for the few that it will work for. If you can get by with the short range, it's one of the most stylish and well-appointed EVs for the money. But if you need a bit more range, whether it's to counter cold weather or to give yourself some buffer, it's a non-factor. As such, we suspect that the upcoming series hybrid will actually be the MX-30 to have.

It’s not just the perceived quality of the materials that hits you, but also the functionality of the interior. The seats are as comfortable as they are visually inspired, and there are loads of thoughtfully designed cork cubbies, offering more storage for your phone and water bottles than you could ever need.

That incredible centre console, despite looking like something out of a Star Wars-esque flying metropolis, is positioned perfectly in front of your hand, allowing easy access to the rotary controller. It’s a shame about the short range because I could spend a lot longer in the car than the circa 120 miles range would take me.
