Mazda has confirmed that the MX-30 will be going on sale in Canada. It's likely to arrive some time in 2021.

The Mazda MX-30 is the brand’s first fully electric vehicle, and Japanese brand’s Canadian division has confirmed that it will arrive in 2021.

Although no extra details are available for the time being, the MX-30 that will hit the Canadian market will be the full EV variant, not the recently announced plug-in hybrid MX-30 with a small rotary engine acting as a range extender.

Likely arriving as a 2022 model, the Mazda MX-30 is a five-passenger, four-door subcompact crossover that focuses on sportiness and handling, hence the “MX” designation like the Mazda MX-5—as well as the MX-3 and MX-6 before them. The vehicle’s coupe-like design notably features smaller, rearward-opening doors, paying tribute to the late Mazda RX-8.

In the United Kingdom, one of the countries where the Mazda MX-30 is already on sale, the e-Skyactiv electric powertrain produces 143 horsepower (145 PS, 107 kW) and 200 pound-feet (271 Nm) of torque, sent to the front wheels via a single-speed transmission. The 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) dash is estimated at 9.7 seconds, while top speed is limited to 139 km/h or 87 mph. The 35.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides a combined WLTP city/highway driving range of about 124 miles or 200 kilometres.

The MX-30 rides on a 2,655-mm (104.5-inch) wheelbase and has an overall length of 4,395 mm (173.0 inches), which is about the same size as the Mazda CX-30. The two crossovers are also very close in regards to interior dimensions, although the CX-30 has more rear-seat headroom and legroom. Cargo space in the EV is rated at 366 litres (12.9 cubic feet) at the window line with the rear seats in place, and 1,171 litres (41.4 cubic feet) with the seatbacks folded.

In Canada, the Mazda MX-30 should get the brand’s Mazda Connect infotainment system with 8.8-inch screen, console-mounted rotary dial, navigation as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The crossover will also be available with blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and driver attention alert.

Pricing has not been revealed yet, but we’re expecting the base trim level to squeeze in below the $45K mark, making it eligible for the federal and provincial (where applicable) EV rebates. It will likely rival the Chevrolet Bolt EV, the Hyundai Kona EV, the Kia Niro EV and the Nissan LEAF.

Other Mazda model updates for the 2021 model year include the 100th anniversary edition across almost all the lineup as well as the Kuro editions of the Mazda6, the Mazda CX-5 and the Mazda CX-9. In addition, a turbocharged engine has just been announced for the 2021 Mazda CX-30 and the 2021 Mazda3.
