Car Buzz put together an interesting article that looks at some of the unanswered questions surrounding the MX-30. Questions surrounding its sale date in the US and its range extender.

Mazda was late to the EV party, but its first-ever electric vehicle, the Mazda MX-30, certainly made an impression with its rugged styling and unique interior. The MX-30 made its world debut last October, and now the electric crossover is entering production. Mazda has announced that production of the MX-30 has started at the company's plant in Hiroshima, Japan.

While the MX-30 is built on the same platform as the Mazda CX-30 and the Mazda 3 Hatchback, it boasts a unique design featuring squared-off wheel arches, a contrasting black roof, and suicide doors.

Inside, the interior features a floating center console, a seven-inch touchscreen, and a range of environmentally friendly materials such as cork and door trim fabric incorporating fibers from recycled plastic bottles.

The new MX-30 is equipped with Mazda's new e-Skyactiv electric drive technology. The front-wheel-drive powertrain combines a 143-hp electric motor with a 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery, enabling the electric crossover to deliver a WLTP-estimated driving range of around 124 miles. That may sound low, but Mazda prioritized efficiency over range, and there's still the possibility of a rotary engine range extender in the future.

However, there's no denying the fact that this range pales in comparison to its rivals such as the Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Kona EV, which both offer over 250 miles of range. Mazda still hasn't confirmed if the MX-30 will go on sale in the US, but if it does it will need to have a vastly improved range to be competitive.

This could still happen, however, using the aforementioned range extender. This setup was also used in a Mazda2 electric prototype and increased the range to a more respectable 236 miles. Mazda has confirmed the order books for the MX-30 are now open in Europe. It will go on sale in European dealerships this fall, starting at £30,495 in the UK and €33,990 in Germany (approx. $36,400).

Hi @Dutchdevil, welcome to the forum. What made you decide to pre-book the MX-30 over other EVs? Also, have they given you a specific date for your test drive?

Hi @ReillyJ,
Thanks for welcoming me, low range hasn't been an issue for me. The fact of the whole car fully loaded with options already has been a trigger and i've had several Mazda cars in my life (huge fan). For the Test drive they don't have an exact date yet, should be in early summer months (juni or july) delivery date for my car is week 38 (mid september).

Hey @Dutchdevil, a couple questions about charging...

What's the EV charging network like around you?
Are you looking into a home charger setup as well? If so, what options have you seen?

Hi @MXE,

Our home netwerk is fully capable of charging to full in around 5 hours overnight. (3x 35A) with normal 1x35A it is around 10 hours overnight for the MX-30. I have got myself an EVBox Elvi for the car which is capable for these charging times. For on the road almost every 20-30 km there are fuel stations which have fast charger for use on the road which charge the MX-30 in around 30-40 minuten to 80%. For me this buys me time for a coffee and a sigaret.

I booked mine in early Feb and only got it early Oct. The main reason to pre-book was to benefit from fiscal advantages for the year, and get the car in 2020. At that time alternatives, such as KIA, were not ensured of delivery in 2020 or were more expensive.
Alternatives would have been KIA e-soul or Hyundai Kona with 39 Kwh batt, but both are more expensive when you take the trim level comparable to MX30. Also, both and Huyandai in particular look a bit cheap from the in- and outside. But KIA might have been a good alternative. MG ZS EV I did not take for lack of (nearby) dealer support, quality concern, and many issues with the car. All other alternatives would have been much more expensive.
