Could this aid range anxiety

EV's crappy (30 - 60 minutes vs 30 - 60 seconds...) version of the red gas tank :) Dump enough of them in the trunk and you can more than double your total capacity :D

As for aiding anxiety... I could see this being an emergency backup (like those red gas tanks...except waiting 30 - 60 minutes to "fill up") but not really something I would consider for any kind of regular use.

Personally, absolutely minimal range anxiety here that I would even consider this. I bought the MX 30 knowing full well I would have to plan my charging ahead of time, or limit it to 30-40 miles from the house on any given trip. Any further and we use the other (Honda Clarity with 350+ range including 7 gal of gas) car in the garage

I was thinking of the current unreliability of public chargers...turn up to charge and they don't work...there will be some who are tempted to alleviate that issue but at probably £750 upwards an expensive spare charger and not for me. Could it work as a rental option when you know you have a longer journey? Food for thought...oh and we don't exactly have boot space for cases and this charger!

I was looking into these as well, this is exactly the sort of thing that would be great for the 3 or 4 times a year when you need to do a longer trip and you aren’t sure how reliable the charging network is going to be!

My issue with this device is that is appears to supply only via a type 2, this means the battery has an inverter… Which is going to increase the size and mass of the unit, while also contributing unnecessarily to charging losses.
I’m guessing there are supply current issues with a DC supply… Until they actually publish the battery spec we can only speculate.

-Edit- I’m wrong, type2 can supply low current DC.

seen on BBC gadget show but...
  • bloody expensive
  • bloody heavy
  • provides 20-40 miles (which are the ones you probably lost because you were carrying this thing in the boot?)

nice idea, but does not deliver any benefit imho. if you are running low juice there are ways already to get extra 20 miles I would say.

Well i guess and hope that one in this mx-30 lifespan, specialists will arise that are able to upgrade ur mx-30 battery pack. Those are already exchangeable. I saw already ev's with 200 000 miles on it Why buy a new car if u can upgrade and renew it? The costs of a new batt pack should eventually drop within 5 years?
I Saw that little extra batt pack too and at the same time i Saw a little carriage for behind An ev, with An extra batt pack size 40kw. That's interesting for hiring in holiday time.

Here is my calculations based on using top of the line 3500mAh LG MJ1 18650 Li-Ion cells, and the prices are retail, so would be much cheaper wholesale (where Samsung cells can be had for ~£2 per cell ). But this working is for a homebuild project.

Font Material property Parallel Number Pattern

A module is made from 96 Li-Ion cells, and a battery is built from any number of parallel modules to achieve the desired range.

If we were to use my second type of module, with the cells arranged like a Battenberg cake, then we can see the specs seem really similar to the advertised portable unit!

Not sure How happy I'd be paying £7000 for something about the size of a 24 pack of Pepsi Max... 13.7kWh though!!!

I saw a program a few months ago where a company were changing Nissan Leaf batteries. The gist of the program was that the older leafs range was low compared with later models. So this company we’re getting newer leaf’s as write offs & taking the battery out & putting them into older leafs for people who were wanting to keep their older cars. Apparently it was quite successful, anybody else see this program ?

I didnt, but i know that there are indeed initiatives for renewing battery packs. In the Netherlands there are companies who can add extra batteries. I just asked the dealer what a new set of mx-30 battery costs in euro’s. He sent me a printscreen: total costs (no work done yet) only battery and screws enz……17000,01 euro (yesss, that 1 cent is most interesting part of the amount.

Apologies for going off topic a bit here, but I read somewhere that the MX30 has the same battery pack as the Honda E (Panasonic I think), and that they're better than your average quality. Anybody else seen this?
